Keeping baby healthy the natural way

Sure, we all want our children to be healthy and happy, but do we sometimes forget that popping a Motrin for a quick fix could potentialy harm our child’s health long term? Of course we do! When babies are crying from fever, cold symptoms or aches and pains, our first instinct is to immediately soothe the pain, but after reading an interesting article on holistic treatments for viral illness I started to think about the ingredients in common children’s cold and flu medicines. For the sake of this post, I’m referring to Mortin. Here are the ingredients listed for Children’s Motrin (Tropical punch flavor)- acesulfame potassium, anhydrous citric acid, FD&C Red #40, flavors, glycerin, polysorbate 80, pregelatinized starch, purified water, sodium benzoate, sucralose, sucrose, xanthan gum. First of all, I can’t even pronounce the majority of these words. Do I really want to make my baby ingest this stuff!? And no, we don’t want to make you feel bad about using products the majority of the human race is using, however, see if these holistic treatments can’t give your baby the same fix Motrin can. (And please, always consult your doctor)

For a stuffy nose, tip your baby’s head back and squeeze salt water drops into his nostrils to loosen up the mucus. Then suction out the liquid and mucus a few minutes later with a rubber bulb syringe. Apply petroleum jelly to the outside of your baby’s nostrils to reduce irritation. Also try adding eucalyptus to a vaporizer to help ease congestion.

For a cough or sore throat use 1/2 teaspoon of organic honey (for babies 12 months or older). For an extra vitamin C boost add a squeeze of lemon.

For a yucky tummy try your best to keep baby hydrated. If you breastfeed, continue to do so. The last thing you want is a dehydrated baby. Try some drops of chamomile (an eye dropper works best) which has a soothing effect not only on the stomach but also on the entire body.
